A Comparative Study on the Successful Aging for Korean Elderly Women and Elderly Men

Abstract
The purposes of this study were (i) to observe the perception of successful aging, (ii) to analyze the differences in perception of successful aging between Korean elderly men and elderly women, and (iii) to find the factors including related variables that influencing successful aging. Korean elderly aged 65 and over were sampled using a purposive sampling method. Subjects were selected from Seoul and other rural areas and they have utilized senior welfare center services. After pilot testing, data were collected by face to face interview with the elderly in the senior welfare centers from April to June, 2006. A total of 527 copies of questionnaire were analyzed by multiple regression. The results showed that the level of elderly women for successful aging was not different from elderly men, each of elderly emphasizes the importance of success of their children and accompanying with their spouse. The variables affecting successful aging of elderly women were self-esteem, social support, residential area, age, self-rated health status and self-rated economic status, spirituality, and social activity. For elderly men, spirituality, social support, spouse, self-rated health status, and social activity were important variables. Based on these findings, a number of implications for the successful aging for the elderly men and elderly women were presented.
